Does Renters Insurance Cover Storage Units?

Last updated Aug 05, 2026

Yes

Yes — your policy's personal-property coverage extends to belongings kept off-premises, including a storage unit. The catch is the cap: off-premises property is typically covered up to 10% of your personal-property limit.

So a policy with $30,000 of personal-property coverage protects roughly $3,000 of what's in your storage unit. If the unit holds more than that, the fix is raising your limit or insuring the unit separately — not assuming.

What's covered

Theft from the unit

A broken-into storage unit is a theft claim like any other, minus your deductible, up to the off-premises cap.

Fire, smoke, and vandalism

The same named perils that protect belongings in your apartment follow them into storage.

Storm damage

Wind or hail damage to what's inside the unit is covered — the same way it would be at home.

Property in transit, generally

Belongings stolen from a moving truck are usually covered as off-premises theft, subject to the same cap and your deductible.

What's not covered

Flood damage

Ground-level storage units flood, and rising water is excluded from renters policies wherever your property sits.

Pests, mildew, and gradual damage

Rodents, moths, humidity, and slow deterioration are excluded — and they're the most common ways stored property actually dies.

Anything above category sublimits

Jewelry, watches, firearms, and cash carry their own low sublimits that apply in storage too. Expensive categories need scheduled coverage regardless of where you keep them.

Amounts above the off-premises cap

The 10% cap is the number that surprises people. Storing a whole apartment's worth of furniture against a 10% cap leaves most of its value uninsured.

Do the two-minute math before you rent the unit

Add up what's actually going into storage — furniture sets and appliances add up faster than expected. Compare the total to 10% of your personal-property limit. Renters carrying the common $10,000–$30,000 limits have $1,000–$3,000 of off-premises protection, which covers a closet's worth, not a household's worth.

If the gap is real, you have three options, cheapest first: raise your personal-property limit (which raises the 10% cap with it), buy the storage facility's contents policy for the term you need it, or — for a single valuable item — schedule it on your policy so it's covered at full value anywhere.

About the coverage the facility sells

Storage facilities usually require proof of insurance and will happily sell you theirs. It isn't automatically redundant: facility policies cover property only at that location, but often without the 10% math, and claims don't touch your renters policy's history. For long-term storage of valuable contents, compare the facility policy's price against raising your own limit before defaulting to either.

Common questions

How much of my storage unit does renters insurance cover?

Typically 10% of your personal-property limit. With $20,000 in personal-property coverage, about $2,000 of stored belongings are protected. Your deductible and category sublimits (jewelry, firearms, cash) still apply.

Do I need the storage facility's insurance if I have renters insurance?

Not necessarily — facilities that require insurance generally accept proof of your renters policy. Buy the facility's coverage when the value in the unit exceeds your off-premises cap and raising your own limit would cost more.

Does renters insurance cover my things in a moving truck?

Usually, as off-premises theft coverage — subject to the same 10% cap and your deductible. Damage from the move itself (dropped boxes, shifting loads) is not covered; that's what the mover's valuation coverage is for.

Does it matter if the unit is climate-controlled?

Not to your insurer — coverage terms are the same. But since humidity, mildew, and pest damage are excluded from every renters policy, climate control is the only real protection for furniture and textiles in long-term storage.
